The city of Barcelona, Spain, needs no introduction as it is home to a world famous soccer team, Olympic game, world expos as well as international conventions and exhibitions such as Mobile World Congress and IBTM World (formerly known as EIBTM). All these helped to highlight Barcelona’s ability to host large scale events for thousands of guests. In fact, such great credentials may have overshadowed Barcelona as a destination for smaller meetings and conferences.
In terms of accommodation and hotel function venues, international chains such as Pullman, W Hotel, Mandarin Oriental and Hotel Arts Barcelona (The Ritz Carlton), delivers luxurious guest rooms and excellent event facilities for medium to large conferences and gala dinners. There are, however, other smaller but more interesting accommodation choices in the city, and non-hotel event venues galore. Imagine having a meeting within a whimsical building, or party at beautiful seaside locations, and stay amongst a collector’s prized collection of art and artifacts.
Incentive travel organizers can design events along themes such gastronomical, arts, architecture and sports. For example, MICE delegates may go on a journey of discovery for Michelin-star restaurants; have team-building sports activities at some of the Olympic games venues or F1 race track, or play alongside former team members of the Barcelona Football Club at their home stadium. Arts and architecture enthusiasts may go for an “amazing-race” through Gothic quarters, discover Antoni Gaudi’s Modernist buildings and create-your-own Gaudi mosaic lizard.
MICE delegates may also explore Barcelona by riding eco-friendly Mercedes smart electric bicycles, rolling down the lively streets; then admire the city from the air taking the cable car from Montjuïc hill; and end the day by sailing along the coast of Barcelona and admire the skyline of the city in an eco-boat... all within a day! Then, take time off to visit traditional cava maker Codorniu’s cellars and Montserrat – a spectacular monastary perch high up in the mountain, just an hour or two away from the city.
Barcelona is a creative city that transmit dynamism! This is reflected on the local destination managers, who are enthusiastic to listen to any wild request from MICE organizers and to make things happen. Therefore, MICE groups should come here to feel the vibes and in turn project the dynamism back to their own companies.
