From 18 to 25 January 2016, the Philippines hosted the ASEAN Tourism Forum as well as the accompanying TRAVEX travel tradeshow in Manila. Both events were great success. The government tourism authority of each ASEAN country not only showcased great plans for its own tourism development, but also put up strong proposition for cooperation among the countries. These include jointly promoting ASEAN as one destination to the world, as well as encouraging intra-ASEAN tourism. Each country will also lead in thematic tourism promotion such as cruise, spa and eco-tourism and adventure, etc.
At TRAVEX, some 2620 delegates from 74 countries visited the show, including about 1,000 sellers, 632 buyers and media from 64 countries, as well as other government dignitaries and guests. The Philippines has put up a good show welcoming guests of both ATF and TRAVEX. Airport transfers and ground transport were fairly well arranged even though there is room for improvement in terms of punctuality. The half-day pre-show tour, though short, has effectively highlighted Manila’s culture, landmarks and history. Over the 3-day TRAVEX show, delegates not only got to attend formal activities in different venues but also experienced partying in a variety of hotels and clubs. Delegates gave positive feedback that it was a good annual networking opportunity, although sellers would have been happier if there were more new buyers and new business opportunities.
Nevertheless, the smooth running of both events pointed to the Philippines’ readiness to host MICE events, big or small. The country’s varied cultures and colonial influences from Spain is an attraction. Just in Manila, many historic and heritage sites such as the old city of Intramuros, Baluarte de San Diego Gardens, Fort Santiago as well as modern facilities such as The City of Dreams, can be interesting venues MICE theme events. The Philippines’ southern islands also have much to offer with exotic locations in Palawan, Boracay, Iloilo, Bohol and more. Airports and infrastructure are being upgraded to improve connectivity to these locations.
However, one key concern of MICE organizers and tourists alike is still the issue of security in the Philippines. There has been much bad publicity about problems ranging from terrorism, kidnapping, fraud and simply petty crimes. While there is no immediate solution to these problems, tourism authority in the Philippines could make the public relations team work harder to counter bad press, allay fears and correct misperception regarding the security situation, something that its counterpart in Thailand has done very well. Another challenge for Manila would be to tackle the heavily clogged up traffic situation. MICE is all about timing and efficiency. Smooth transport is crucial for event logistics and for ferrying MICE delegates from point to point. If the issues of security and traffic are handled well, the Philippines would have great potential as a MICE destination.
