The Shanghai Expo Centre is one of the buildings constructed on the 2010 Shanghai World Expo site. During the Expo, this building functioned as a command and operations centre, and was used for official ceremonies, cultural performances, VIP receptions and press conferences. The building is eco-conscious, as evident from the trees, vertical gardens and natural sunlight that welcome guests at the lobby.
Since the ending of the Expo, the Shanghai Expo Centre has been converted into an international conventions and exhibition centre. With a total built-up area of 140,000sqm, multiple function rooms of all sizes, and flexible floor planning that can be partitioned to customers’ requirement, needless to say, organizers will definitely be able to find a suitable function space within this building.
The scale and size of some of the function space here is just huge. For example, the Grand Hall with 2,600 lecture theatre seating has such a large stage, very few convention or even commercial concert organizers will find use for this. This Grand Hall is probably built with Party and Government meetings in mind.
While the Shanghai Expo Centre boasts excellent event space and facilities, the area surrounding the Centre is very bare, as most of the expo exhibits have been cleared from the massive site. Hence, without hotel, food, entertainment and shopping within the vicinity, organizers and event delegates may not find it attractive to come here for the time being. We shall see how the area transforms itself when IT&CM China 2012 moves to Shanghai Expo Centre in April 2012.
