There are many museums and palaces in Krakow that can be utilized as meetings and incentive group venues, but none can beat the experience of having meetings at a depth of over 120m underground. Salt mining activities in the Wieliczka region started from the Middle Ages and lasted till the 1990s, resulting in a depth of over 300m underground in this mine. The tourist route, which encompasses the various meeting facilities, is between 64m to 135m underground.
Visitors are taken down to the first level in a tiny, dimly lit elevator – a true experience of what miners in the past had to go through. Then the visitors are led deeper through various tunnels and stairways, visiting a museum showcasing life inside the mine in the old days, underground waterways and ponds, before being awed by the St. Kinga Chapel at 125m underground. This is a truly grand hall with high ceiling and large chandeliers made out of salt crystals and intricate carvings of biblical scenes on all sides of the wall. This space is excellent for meeting or concert for 300-400 guests in theatre style.
The Warsaw Chamber can take in 600 guests theatre style or about 400 guests for gala dinner. Two other smaller function spaces (Drozdowice III and IV Chambers) can accommodate between 110 to 160 guests in theatre style. All these function spaces have high ceiling height of between 6.5m to 17m, and are equipped with modern IT (including Internet access), audio and visual facilities, while some include built-in stage. Top executives who wish to conduct highly confidential meeting may like the Jan Haluszko II Chamber, a very private boardroom-styled room reminiscent of a war-time secret command centre. This room is ideal for about 20 people in boardroom setting.
Elaborate stage backdrop and settings are not advisable, for obvious logistic reasons; but who needs anything more than the spectacular natural backdrop!
The Wieliczka Salt Mine, which is about an hour’s drive from Krakow’s city centre, is most suitable for convention gala dinners, incentive group meetings and activities. Corporate groups will also find this an all-in-one venue for meetings, team-building activities (with adventure, educational, health or spiritual-related themes) and dinner functions. Catering facilities is available for the convenience of organizers.
