The Vinum Restaurant is located in Graham’s Port Wine Cellar in Gaia. Graham’s Lodge was built in 1890, in Vila Nova de Gaia on the Douro Estuary near the Atlantic Ocean. Here, the maritime climate is ideally suited to the balanced ageing of Graham’s Ports. The sturdy granite walls of the lodge currently house over 3,500 casks of Port as well as a unique Vintage Port cellar.
The restaurant is perched on the hillside and offers a panoramic view of Porto across the Douro River. Guests may choose to sit in the glasshouse setting with natural sunlight and view, or a more cosy setting sheltered from the sun.
The bread here was served warm, fresh and crusty, excellent to dip with Portugal’s very own extra-virgin olive oil (unfortunately, it took them quite a long time to serve the oil). For mains, the oxtail slow-cooked in red wine sauce was so tender it almost melted in the mouth, without being too mushy. For dessert, the thin apple pie with ice cream was not overly sweet or sour, and the pie crust retains its crispness. For unknown reason, the restaurant manager and staff failed to provide us with the menu of the day despite repeated requests. Hence we are unable to provide further information in this review.
Guests at this restaurant may also go for an educational tour and wine tasting at the Graham’s Port Wine Cellar before or after the meal. The experience would have been great, if the service quality matches up.
